May 27, 2020 Update
Happy cloudy Wednesday afternoon!
We are working on developing a survey for parents to get some ideas about what worked well this spring for distance learning and what didn't work so well. Many factors are outside of our control, but as we plan for next year, this information will be very helpful.
There are many, many sites out there are that claiming to be the official regulations that must happen in order for schools to reopen. I cannot stress enough that no one knows, at this point, what the fall will look like. Schools are making plans for many different contingencies, but there are no hard and fast rules that have been established for Iowa schools to reopen. Also, remember that schools are controlled by state governments. Any requirements will come from Des Moines.
A note on Junior High baseball. The Department of Education decided that high school baseball/softball could take place, but that JH baseball/softball could not. If that seems a little odd to you, there's a good reason for that. Youth leagues can happen. Traveling teams can happen. High School games can happen. JH is the only sector that does not have permission to play. This is a state-level decision and not one made by individual school districts.

The Elementary Food Pantry will be open Thursday, May 28th from 2:00 - 4:30. Please pull around the back of the building. We have a few new items we will be giving out tomorrow: milk, eggs, fajita chicken, popcorn chicken, oranges, radishes and sliced peppers as well as other regular items.

Interested baseball players, please note: Meeting for interested baseball players grades 8-12 Meeting date is 5/26 (Tuesday) Meeting time is 7PM Zoom Session link - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88349566426?pwd=QWFQVndrczBLQVVtdVh5aGVWYWp1UT09 Mr. Brown is requiring the athlete and/or parent attend. This is vital to getting number of athletes wanting to participate and the information in the hands of everyone. If someone does not have access to zoom or the internet, they may text or call Mr. Brown at 563-506-2341.

May 26, 2020 Update:
Tomorrow night's board meeting will be at 6:00 in the district office. In order to promote and encourage social distancing, the meeting will be livestreamed on the district Facebook page.
This afternoon is the parade honoring the 5 retirees from WCSD. If you would like to be part of the parade, be at the Wapello Fair grounds on the north end of town at 5:45. Congratulations to Phyllis Connolly, Ken Spielbauer, Judy Gerst, Kathy Begey, and Merle Unkrich!
Some random social distancing information for you today. Many people have a hard time picturing six feet, so here are some things to help you determine if you are maintaining the correct amount of social distance. 6 feet is the same as: the typical refrigerator after you have pushed it over; the average couch, provided your children have not ruined it by playing "quarantine tag"; 2 adult cats stretched end to end; and, of course, one Iowa State Fair Butter Cow.
In addition to maintaining the same distance as two adult cats stretched end to end, remember all the recommendations:
Wash your hands.
Cover your cough.
Wash your hands.
Stay home if you are ill.
Wash your hand.
Practice social distancing.
Wash your hands.

As many of you know, today is supposed to be graduation day for our Wapello HS 2020 grads. Well, that day will eventually come and we will honor our seniors with the typical graduation ceremony later this summer. However, the WCSD staff thought it would be fun to give our Class of 2020 grads a special video on what should have been their day. The staff took on the Tik Tok Quarantine Catch Challenge. Check out our special, unique, and definitely entertaining gift to our senior class! #wearewapello #wapellotribepride #quarantinecatchchallenge #diplomatoss

Our final Senior Shouts for the Class of 2020 go out to Kari Wilson, Brian Redmond and Freya Thompson. These three are part of the Wapello Class of 2020 who would also have graduated this Sunday.
Congratulations to these students on their graduation from WHS Class of 2020 #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

On Sunday night, we're going to light up the ball fields one more time for the year in recognition of the senior class who would have graduated that day! #lightupIA will again light up the night sky in Wapello around sunset and remain on for 53 minutes (one minute for each member of the senior class).
Check the site for arial views (barring rain), and look for a special recognition for the class of 2020.

Wapello High School staff and students would like to wish a Congratulations to the following students. In a normal year, they would be among those walking across the stage to receive their diploma this Sunday. But this final semester has been anything but normal, so we honor them here now, until we can officially later this summer.
Congratulations to Matthew Engle, Alex Earnest, Oshen McGowan and Autumn Starkweather as they plan to graduate with the WHS class of 2020 #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020
